October 2008: APM lodged its formal petition and draft Charter and by-laws with the Privy Council Office.

July 2013: APM was informed that a committee of the Privy Council had unanimously reached its recommendation that a Royal Charter should be granted to APM, and that this recommendation would be placed on the list of business for the meeting of the Privy Council to be held in October 2013. This decision was subsequently challenged by Project Management Institute (PMI) who sought permission for Judicial Review, naming the Minister for the Cabinet Office, the Privy Council Office and the Attorney General as Defendants, and APM as an interested party.

July 2014: Having reserved judgment at the substantive hearing of the Judicial Review claim which ended on 9 July 2014 at the High Court in London, the Judge, Mr Justice Mitting, handed down his judgment on 17 July 2014. The Judge dismissed the claim on all grounds.

November 2015: The Court of Appeal met to hear the appeal by PMI against the decision of the Government to award a Charter to APM.

On 22 January 2016 The Court of Appeal handed down its judgement with respect to the appeal brought by the Project Management Institute (PMI) against the Government’s recommendation to the Privy Council to grant the award of a Royal Charter to the Association for Project Management (APM).

The three Appeal Court Judges unanimously confirmed the earlier decision of the High Court to reject PMI’s appeal. The full judgement is available on the Court of Appeal website .
